Output Transformer Measurement

Output Transformer Measurement

We’ve received feedback that some says, your transformer measurement technique is not representative of what it will be in actual circuit as it is measured with “perfect” source. In actual fact, the bandwidth of the output transformer will be lower due to “real” source being used.

We can understand meaning of that. Perfect source means that equipment like the function generator, LCR meter, audio analyzer and such are having very low output impedance and low output capacitance, therefore, the results measured will be very wide in bandwidth due to such criteria.
Above is true, but it is still needed to do so. Why? We need to measure the real performance of the transformer, independent of the source. Only in that way, we know the real performance of the output transformer and we can have apple to apple comparison between transformers.

If we don’t use that and use a real amplifier with real output impedance in the region of hundreds to thousands, the measured results will not carry any meaning as the reference will be varying among the people measuring it. One measures with say, tube A, another guy measures with tube B. Even if both use same tube, the batch differences, circuit differences, input source differences, equipment stability, wiring differences, chassis differences, power supply differences, mains differences and many other factors will pollute the measured data and carry no meaning at all for benchmarking.
Therefore, it is required that all of us use the same standard measurement equipment that is calibrated by standards laboratory for measurement. This is the industry standard way.

Of course, testing it in real environment is something we will do as well to again, look at the output transformer in another perspective for evaluation purposes.
